What
is a computer virus? A virus is a program that replicates
itself and spreads to other computers without the user's knowledge. Viruses
are also known as worms or trojans and are spread by email, floppy and zip
disks, CD-ROMs, web sites, Instant Messaging, and networks. Currently there
are over 71,000 viruses and variations. Most of these viruses do very little
harm to a computer and are little more than annoyances, but some can cause
damage to your computer and it's files. |

|
| |
To further confuse and annoy
people, there are virus hoaxes. By sending
on an email to warn friends and colleagues, you are helping a virus hoax
to clog email servers and slow down Internet traffic. |

How do you protect yourself
against viruses? First and foremost, install an antivirus
program. Second, keep your program updated! Regularly scheduled updates
are required because new viruses appear all the time. Third, practice safe
email: don't open email attachments unless you are expecting one (even if
you know the sender!). If you must open an attachment, save it to your hard
drive first, scan it for viruses, and then open it. (Do this for floppy
disks as well.) Please see this
article for more tips. |

What if you get a virus? First,
don't panic! Most viruses are easily removed. Do not try to fix it yourself
using instructions from a friend's email – those are usually email
hoaxes. Use an antivirus program to confirm and remove the virus yourself,
or turn your computer off and seek the advice of someone who knows how to
remove the virus. (We can always help!) |
